My back-story

Ceramacist, Katie holding a handthrown vase in her pottery studio

I’ve been inspired by all the #marchmeetthemaker posts, and always love hearing other people’s back-story, so here’s mine.

Before becoming a potter I worked for around 10 years in PR, where I learnt about branding, marketing and design for clients in the home sector. I had dabbled in clay on and off, but it was only after having a career break after having my two children that I started to specialize in porcelain, attending classes at a local art centre.

I started making large slip-cast porcelain vessels but afterwards fell in love with the intimacy of making a handmade pot on the wheel. As my proficiency grew, I was able to convert a former defunct conservatory into a garden studio (blogpost on building my studio) and Kt Robbins Ceramics was born (about 8 years ago).

Throwing has been a great outlet for my creativity; and fast became a passion.

I’m drawn to softer, mainly pastel shades which bring joy, as well as vessels that hold tea or flowers!

My pottery addiction has also reinvigorated my love for my garden, and my latest project involves growing more of my own flowers from seed for displaying in my pots.

My latest addition to my pottery collection are these petal bowls which can be used as display bowls or in conjunction with flower frog pins to create an eye-catching, Ikebana style display. They are part of my new spring collection being launched on March 9.
