Is it really spring already?
I was a bit confused so I looked it up, and according to meterologists, spring starts March 1 and lasts 3 months until the end of May, and is based on average temperatures. There are already signs of spring, with the first little snow-drops and crocus peeping through and the first delicate and much welcome sprigs of pink blossom. I also watch the garden birds from my studio, and love hearing their courtship songs
However astronomists believe the season starts on March 20, the date of the spring equinox, when day and night are of equal length. Whichever you choose to celebrate spring is definitely in the air!
I find the winter months a particulary hard slog so welcome any opportunity to bring a sense of freshness into my home and studio - tulips are a particular favourite.
So, it seems very fitting that this month we will have a new theme for #wipsandblooms; #wipsandblooms_spring. And I'm really excited to announce that we have a guest judge this month, Debbie from the Sheffield independent shop, @Moonko, and she is also donating a fab prize, that I'm particularly jealous of!
I discovered Debbie via Instagram, and her feed is a constant source of inspiration for plants, ceramic planters, weaving and designer prints and gifts. On top of running the shop, Debbie organises workshops and community meet-ups - I have no idea where she gets the energy, but I am in awe. If you would like to read more about her, then @91 magazine did a fabulous interview with her here.
There seems to be so much botanical goodness going on in Debbie's shop, and I know that she is a bit of a plant expert too. Spring is also the start of the growing season for house-plants, so I'm excited to reveal this month's prize is this tricolour, Hoya. I just adore its pink blush on the leaves - could be inspiration for a new ceramic dish!
If you've not joined in before its really easy. Any kind of making counts, from baking to crochet, from drawing to jewellery - just show us a little process shot. Its about celebrating the process of your #wip / work-in-progress, And if you can style with some spring blooms then it fits perfectly into our gallery. Please tag @moonko, myself @ceramicmagpie and Kate, @aplayfulday so that we see your entries easily.
For some inspiration here are some more images from my studio and from other makers too.
And the winning entry from last month was this beautiful botanical embroidery from @tuskandtwine, who received a set of spring postcards from artist @rekersdressdesign.
I hope you might join in this month.
In the meantime - happy making and happy Spring!
This month Moonko have generously supplied a prize.
