#wipsandblooms - June and #leaf_ladies_habitat
I really hope I'm not going to jinx our chance of sunshine with the title of this blog!
Before I launch into what I've been up to and my summer hashtags I wanted to share an observation. I've noticed two interesting things going on with Instagram recently. Firstly all the new people who have joined are really loving the sense of community, and finding like-minded people who share their aesthetics and interests. Then, there are the people who have been using the app for a while, who seem to have lost some of their passion, since the algorithm no longer shares posts like it used to.
We are living in a world that is constantly changing therefore you have to adapt and go with a new flow, or work harder to find your community. I loved seeing @Allison_sadler's take on this with #freeupyourinsta, which encouraged people to post more of the things that make them happy.
I'm asking something similar, but in a more niche way. I'm encouraging all the #leaf_ladies (and lads) to show off their green spaces, a corner of their homes and gardens which they are proud of, their maker space, or anywhere there is some lush greenery for the hashtag #leaf_ladies_habitat. And then, go and say hi, make friends with these people, be inspired by their use of greenery, exchange plant care tips and advice.
To get you all excited about greenery in your homes, I'm really excited to announce that we have the very lovely and creative Libby (@_&hobbs) from the independent home store andhobbs, who will be a guest judge for #leaf_ladies_habitat for the first two weeks of August. Her beautiful store has gone from strength to strength in a very short space of time.
Libby, how long have you had your shop and how did it all start?
After a little bit of time I got to the stage where I could introduce other makers to my brand. Honest skincare was my first ever stockist and I was so proud to finally put my dreams into something tangible. When my son was four and half months old a local family came to me with a property to look at. Thinking that this was not the perfect time to start a bricks and mortar shop I went to look really to be nosey…..but here I am. Unable to walk away form this incredible space. High ceilings, a lovely feeling about it and the space to include other makers, workshops and to create a real hub for creatives. Just the DREAM! I feel very lucky and super inspired for the future!
How do you consider yourself one of the #leaf_ladies?
What styling or plant tips do you have for people about introducing greenery into their homes for the first time.
I can't wait to see all the new leafy habitats in the gallery.
Normally my blog space is dedicated to my on-going ceramic journey. This month I have been putting together a few new pieces to add to my sea-inspired collection which will be exhibited with other members of the Midlands Potters Association at the Emporium Gallery in Lichfield from 5th-30th September. Next month our theme for #wipsandblooms will be #wipsandblooms_summer.
As usual I'll be asking you to photograph your behind-the-scenes making or progress, styled with some greenery or some garden blooms. Use the tag #wipsandblooms_summer.
I've also been working on a collaboration of black planters for the luxury skincare brand Skin Alchemists Apothecary. Here's a sneak peak of them before they went into the kiln.
And... I've also started work on my first wholesale order for LewesMapStore. So, I'm been really grateful to the reaction I've been getting from my wheel-thrown work, as well as my glaze finishes.
July was an especially creative month for #wipsandblooms, when @janiceissitt_life_style took over as judge and we played #wipsandblooms_birdseye. She chose these four images with lovely summery colours as her favourite from (clockwise L to R) @georgiestclair, @apetalunfolds, @lottsandlots and @bymeeni. All very different making disciplines, and all from very talented creatives.
Our winner from July, was one which captured Janice's bo-ho heart I think... It is from a maker who is starting to specialise in beautiful hand-crafted wooden accessories, finished with a touch of sparkle. Please join me in congratulating @lydialotusdecor.
As a mother of two young children the summer holidays are already in full swing for me and I actually go away to Cardigan Bay in Wales tomorrow, so I thought it would be fun to list all the things that my family and I have on our to-do list. It might inspire you to do a new activity. Or fill up some time...
What about you? Are you doing anything fun for the first time that you think I should add to my list?
Whatever you get up to have a fun month in August and I hope you enjoy some creativity and community with Instagram too, whether that's with my summer hashtags or just photographing and making what brings you joy.
Hi! I'm a ceramicist, based in Kings Heath, Birmingham. Combining beauty and function my porcelain vessels are everyday objects you'll want to treasure. My work is slip-cast and wheel-thrown.
